Selectivity in the consumption of plant matter from the natural habitat by the tropidurid lizard Liolaemus lutzae, endemic to the beach habitats of restingas of southeastern Brazil, and the differences in the qualitative properties of the plants consumed were studied in the Barra de MaricÝ restinga, Rio de Janeiro State. The diets of 180 lizards were analysed and the plant species present in the stomachs and their frequencies were recorded. Only four of the 19 species which occur on the beach (Phylloxerus portulacoides, Althernantera maritima, Ipomoea littoralis and I. pes-caprae) were consumed by the lizard and their frequencies in the stomachs differed from that of occurrence. Analysis of the composition of the leaves of the 13 most abundant plant species indicated that the plants consumed by the lizards had the highest contents of water, total nitrogen, total sugar and the lowest amount of gross fibres. Thus, it appears that L. lutzae is not a generalist herbivore, but feeds selectively on those plants in its environment that are most easily digested and assimilated. As frequências destas na dieta do lagarto diferiram da frequência com que as plantas ocorrem no habitat. A análise da composição das folhas de 13 entre as espécies de plantas mais frequentes indicou que as plantas consumidas pelo lagarto possuem as mais elevadas proporçôes de água, nitrogênio total, açúcar total e a menor proporção de fibras. The neotropical millipede, Gymnostreptus olivaceus, lives at ambient temperatures of about 20ºC. Its thermal tolerance was tested after acclimation to lower and higher temperatures as occurs under winter and summer conditions in the south and southeast regions of Brazil. The influence of fruit ingestion by the bat, Sturnira lilium, on germination of the seeds of the tree Solanum riparium was studied in a secondary rain forest in northwestern Argentina. Bat frequencies in disturbed areas were analyzed by mist net captures. Germination rates were determined for seeds collected from trees and bat feces. S. lilium was the most abundant fruit bat in the study area. Fruit digestion and the passage of seeds through the intestine did not significantly affect germination in S. riparium. The sperm of Siphonaria algesirae (Gastropoda, Pulmonata), a species with internal fertilization, was studied by light and electron microscopy. The spermatozoon is a very long, uniflagellate cell composed of a conical head with an apical acrosome, a midpiece with a helically coiled external sheath containing a complex mitochondrial derivative with a wavelength of ~ 5.5 μm, and an endpiece. There are no axonemal microtubules. Instead, nine homogeneous coarse fibers with transverse striations in the apical zone project toward the anterior section of the midpiece. In the posterior zone of the midpiece the coarse fibers are differentiated in a common microtubular axoneme. The complex mitochondrial derivative of the midpiece shows an organized group of 100 Å diameter spherical particles. Externally the midpiece is surrounded along its length by a cylinder formed by two membranes. A complex structure separates the transitional zone between the midpiece and the endpiece. 相似文献

- Animal behavior is elicited, in part, in response to external conditions, but understanding how animals perceive the environment and make the decisions that bring about these behavioral responses is challenging.
- Animal heads often move during specific behaviors and, additionally, typically have sensory systems (notably vision, smell, and hearing) sampling in defined arcs (normally to the front of their heads). As such, head‐mounted electronic sensors consisting of accelerometers and magnetometers, which can be used to determine the movement and directionality of animal heads (where head “movement” is defined here as changes in heading [azimuth] and/or pitch [elevation angle]), can potentially provide information both on behaviors in general and also clarify which parts of the environment the animals might be prioritizing (“environmental framing”).
- We propose a new approach to visualize the data of such head‐mounted tags that combines the instantaneous outputs of head heading and pitch in a single intuitive spherical plot. This sphere has magnetic heading denoted by “longitude” position and head pitch by “latitude” on this “orientation sphere” (O‐sphere).
- We construct the O‐sphere for the head rotations of a number of vertebrates with contrasting body shape and ecology (oryx, sheep, tortoises, and turtles), illustrating various behaviors, including foraging, walking, and environmental scanning. We also propose correcting head orientations for body orientations to highlight specific heading‐independent head rotation, and propose the derivation of O‐sphere‐metrics, such as angular speed across the sphere. This should help identify the functions of various head behaviors.
- Visualizations of the O‐sphere provide an intuitive representation of animal behavior manifest via head orientation and rotation. This has ramifications for quantifying and understanding behaviors ranging from navigation through vigilance to feeding and, when used in tandem with body movement, should provide an important link between perception of the environment and response to it in free‐ranging animals.

When cultured 3T3-F442A cells undergo adipose differentiation, they produce extracellular matrix (ECM) that is not present in undifferentiated cells. This ECM stains strongly with ruthenium red, tannic acid and with Alcian blue at both pH 1 and 2.5, showing histochemical characteristics similar to sulphated and non-sulphated glycosaminoglycans. Under the electron microscope, ECM was observed bound to the cell surface and in the intercellular space; it was composed of fibrils of several thicknesses with attached granules and fibrous long-spacing forms of collagen. In addition, adipocytes were observed as rounded cells interconnected with the ECM fibrils, thus giving rise to fat cell clusters similar to the adipocyte lobules found in adipose tissue. Since fat cell clusters in culture emerge by clonal expansion of one adipose precursor cell, we suggest that this ECM can keep daughter adipocytes interconnected during differentiation. Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC). Chlorophyll a values obtained with HPLC and spectrophotometry methods presented a highly significant positive correlation for both spectrophotometric
methods used (with and without the correction for pheopigments), but this relationship depended on the type of sediment. We
concluded that spectrophotometric methods give reliable Chl-a values, being suited for routine analysis, when a vast number of replicates is needed. However, for the correct estimation
of pheopigments, HPLC analysis is indispensable. In the literature, Chl-a estimations are expressed per content (μg g−1) or concentration (mg m−2). We discuss the influence of sediment type on the results depending on the type of unit used, and propose a simple conversion

AbstractUnder in vitro culture conditions, plants may present physiological and anatomical disorders, which can interfere negatively after ex vitro transfer. The aim of this investigation was to analyze the impacts of natural ventilation and sucrose supply on the anatomy and physiology of Vriesea imperialis. Plants previously grown in vitro were transferred to culture medium containing 0, 15, 30 or 45?g L?1 sucrose. Three different culture container sealing systems were tested: lids with a green filter (81.35 gas exchanges per day), yellow filter (13.09 gas exchanges per day) or lids with a yellow filter covered with three layers of transparent polyvinylchloride (PVC) film (blocking fluent gas exchange). Sucrose concentrations influenced thickness, lignin and suberin deposition of exodermis cell wall. The modifications verified in leaves, such as higher density of stomata and trichome scales, showed that sucrose can induce osmotic stress in the plants. Photomixotrophic conditions, using containers with intermediate rate of gas exchange (yellow filter) and with 15–30?g L?1 sucrose, produced an improvement in the growth traits and did not induce anatomical and physiological disturbances. 相似文献
